2025 Japan’s “Momiji” Schedule
Let’s figure out when and where is the best autumn “momiji” schedule for 2025
On September 2, 2025, the Japan Meteorological Corporation (JMC) released its first forecast for the start of autumn foliage. JMC has estimated the best viewing dates for red leaves (maple trees) and yellow leaves (ginkgo trees) at around 700 locations across the country, from Hokkaido to Kagoshima.
The momiji, or autumn leaf viewing season, will begin in late October in northern regions like Hokkaido. This is slightly later than last year, when it typically started around early October. Cooler temperatures in these northern areas bring out the vibrant red, orange, and yellow colors first. The colorful foliage then gradually moves southward, reaching the Tohoku region by mid-November. Popular spots such as Lake Towada and Naruko Gorge attract many visitors during this time.
From late November to early December, the momiji season peaks in central Japan, including Kyoto, Nikko, and the Japanese Alps. Kyoto’s historic temples and gardens become especially beautiful, drawing large crowds eager to see the striking contrast between the colorful leaves and traditional architecture. The season continues moving south, reaching western Japan, including Hiroshima and Kyushu, by mid to late December. In southern areas like Kyushu and Shikoku, the momiji colors usually last just before the leaves fall and winter begins.
This staggered timing allows people across Japan to enjoy the autumn foliage over an extended period. For the most accurate and location-specific updates closer to the season, be sure to follow local forecasts and momiji reports.
